Credits and Fees - Associate Members

The academic supervisor in Oxford will recommend to the Associate Member's US home college that he or she receive 13-14 US semester credits for the completion of 14 Oxford tutorials within a thirteen-week period of residence each term. US students normally earn between 14 and 16 semester credits for half an academic year. The Term for an Associate Member who does academic work over a thirteen-week period is therefore approximately equivalent to a standard US semester.

"My academic program was excellent. My tutors were terrific." CM, Claremont-McKenna College

Associate Members enrolled for the entire academic year will normally earn between 36 and 39 US semester credits. The students are not degree candidates in Oxford University and are (by prior arrangement) under the academic supervision of their US home college, not of their Oxford College. It is always the responsibility of the US home college to award credits towards its degree, and proper arrangements for credit transfer should be made in advance. Students may receive a US transcript as overseas students of an accredited US university, the University of the Pacific, in Stockton, California.

Program costs for the 2010-2011 academic year, usually equivalent to 36 to 39 US semester credits, are $62,700. This includes tuition, library and college fees, five educational tours a term, a medical plan and single room housing in a flat or house, normally with British students. To give students more flexibility, we do not charge for meals. Meal costs in Oxford colleges are about $1,300 per term, or about half the cost in comparable US colleges. There is a damage/security deposit of $300 per term, returnable (minus any charges) after the housing has been inspected and bills received by WISC.

"I benefited greatly from the vast experience and knowledge of my tutors. Both tutorials were excellent - I enjoyed them immensely." GL, Swarthmore College

The costs for one term in 2010-2011, usually the equivalent of 13-14 semester credits or one standard US semester, with thirteen weeks in residence, are $20,900. The costs for two terms in 2010-2011 (Fall and Winter or Winter and Spring) are $41,800. Two terms are usually equivalent to 26-28 US semester credits. The costs for the optional five-credit September 2010 (pre-Fall) program are $3,600. Fees for 2010-2011 will probably increase slightly. The Core Course in British Society (see above) is offered at no extra cost.

2010-2011 WISC Associate Member Fees
  • One Term (Fall 2010, Winter 2011 or Spring 2011): $20,900 + $300 security deposit
  • Two Terms (Fall 2010 & Winter 2011, or Winter 2011 & Spring 2011): $41,800 + $600 security deposit
  • All Year (Fall 2010, Winter 2011 & Spring 2011): $62,700 + $900 security deposit
  • September (Pre-Fall) Programme 2010: $3,600

Students, if they wish, may apply for Visiting Student places in Oxford colleges on their own. If they do so and are accepted, their fees will probably be less but they will not have the "safety net" of a U.S. study abroad office in Oxford. Most Oxford colleges will only accept a Visiting Student for an entire academic year and most of these places are "reserved" for students applying through U.S. colleges which have made special arrangements with individual Oxford colleges.

The address for such applications is http://www.admissions.ox.ac.uk/int/visiting/.
