Credits and Fees - Visiting Students

The Oxford Colleges vary slightly in their academic programs. Normally, an Oxford College will recommend to the Visiting Student's US home college that he or she receive between 13 and 15 US semester credits for the completion of between 14 and 18 Oxford tutorials, within 13 weeks of residence each term. The academic program for each student is always under the supervision of each Oxford College. US students normally earn between 14 and 16 semester credits for half an academic year. The Term for a Visiting Student who does academic work over a thirteen-week period is therefore approximately equivalent to a standard US semester.

Visiting Students enrolled for the entire academic year will normally earn between 36 and 39 US semester credits. It is always the responsibility of the US home college to award credits towards its degree, and proper arrangements for credit transfer should be made in advance.

Program costs for the 2007-2008 academic year, usually equivalent to 36 to 39 US semester credits, are $60,000. This includes Oxford College and University tuition and fees, five educational tours a term, a medical plan and single-room housing in a flat or house, normally with at least one British student. To give students more flexibility, we do not charge for meals. Meal costs in Oxford colleges are about $1,300 per term, or about half the cost in comparable US colleges. There is a damage/security deposit of $300 per term, returnable (minus any charges) after the housing has been inspected and bills received by WISC.

"The academic program has been outstanding - all my tutors were excellent." MC, University of Chicago

The costs for one term in 2007-2008, usually the equivalent of 13 to 15 semester credits or one standard US semester, with thirteen weeks in residence, are $22,780. The costs for two terms in 2007-2008 (Fall and Winter or Winter and Spring) are $45,400. Two terms are usually equivalent to between 26 and 28 US semester credits. The costs for the optional five-credit September 2007 (pre-Fall) program (which is not supervised by the University of Oxford) are $2,700. The Core Course in British Society (see above) is offered at no extra cost.

2008-2009 WISC Visiting Student Fees
  • One Term (Fall 2008, Winter 2009 or Spring 2009): $23,900 + $300 security deposit
  • Two Terms (Fall 2008 & Winter 2009, or Winter 2009 & Spring 2009): $46,400 + $600 security deposit
  • All Year (Fall 2008, Winter 2009 & Spring 2009): $60,500 + $900 security deposit
  • September (Pre-Fall) Programme 2008: $3,400

Students, if they wish, may apply for Visiting Student places in Oxford colleges on their own. If they do so and are accepted, their fees will probably be less but they will not have the "safety net" of a U.S. study abroad office in Oxford. Most Oxford colleges will only accept a Visiting Student for an entire academic year and most of these places are "reserved" for students applying through U.S. colleges which have made special arrangements with individual Oxford colleges.
