Summer Session 2008 (with a Shakespeare Course and an International Relations Course option)
Students may study at intervals from May 13 to September 30. We recommend that students study in thesix-week period from May 13 to June 29 if possible. They will have the advantage of the last five weeks of the Trinity (Spring) term, when their college will have extra-curricular activities of all kinds (clubs, teams, balls, etc.). Only WISC (and its related programs) offers "summer" study during the Oxford Trinity term. Outside the normal Trinity term in the summer period there are only a few British students in residence, and so college activities are minimal. However, there are many students here for summer schools, and the city has a rich cultural life. In the summer period (after June 24), some dining halls and college libraries may be closed for certain periods (but other libraries will be open). Accepted students will have the normal privileges of Associate Members in their colleges in Oxford and may use almost all of the student facilities which are open in the summer period. Most of the colleges we work with have computer and email facilities but some may not. Students are welcome to use computers, email and the fax machine in the WISC office. Each house includes a computer. Students may enroll in tutorial courses for a minimum of four weeks (four US semester credits). If a student comes for eight weeks or more he or she could study in two tutorial courses (four credits and five credits). Students may arrive on the following dates to begin their studies: May 13, May 27, June 10, June 24, July 8, July 22, August 5, August 19. Students always arrive on a Tuesday. We offer a special lecture and tutorial courseon Shakespeare, taught by leading Oxford and international scholars. Oxford is the ideal place to study Shakespeare since the students willbe able to attend three plays for each course in Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avonor in the London Globe Theatre. Students may study this course for over five weeks (May 13 - June 20). We offer a course in International Relations for six weeks from July 5 to August 20, 2008. Another session of this course (for 3 credits) is offered from Decemeber 27 to January 18, 2008. Summer students will be Associate Members of their colleges in Oxford in the normal way. They will be academically supervised (by prior arrangement) by their US home college and not by their Oxford college. Students must secure credit approval in advance. Students may earn a transcript from an accredited US University. (They must apply before the start of the term) Please telephone or email us for more detailed information on recommended courses (almost any advanced academic subject at the upper-division level may be studied) and details of the special Shakespeare classes. The summer fees in 2008 (including fees in colleges in Oxford, library fees, tuition and double room housing with at least oneresident Non-American student barring last-minute withdrawals, plusa TV, VCR and computer in each house, a medical plan, etc.) are: $5,830 for four weeks, $7,700 for six weeks, $9,460 for eight weeks, $12,320 for ten weeks and $14,190 for twelve weeks (equivalent to a full semester in Oxford for Associate Members). To give students more flexibility, we donot charge in advance for meals. Students pay their Oxford colleges directly only for meals actually taken in dining halls. Lunches and dinners cost about $7.00 each. In each session, there is a $300 security/damage deposit. |
