The City of Oxford was founded in the time of Alfred the Great (about AD 800) and is one of the leading cultural and artistic centers in England. It has two major universities, Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University. The total student population is over 30,000, drawn from all over the world. London, with its wealth of cultural attractions, is just one hour away by train. Students also often take the opportunity while studying abroad to visit the Continent for a few weeks. Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels, Florence and Rome are easily accessible. Oxford University is one of the most cosmopolitan universities in the world. One-third of the students are citizens of foreign nations. They come from 139 countries and territories. 28% of the teaching staff are also from overseas. The USA sends the largest number of foreign students - 1,413 out of a total student body of about 20,000. Oxford also ranked second (after Harvard) and tied with Yale and Cambridge in the recent rankings of the 200 best universities in the world by The Times Higher Education Supplement. Oxford is the oldest university in the English-speaking world - founded in about AD 1090. OSAP organizes at least five educational tours of Britain each semester. Computer facilities (e-mail) are available in the OSAP office. Not every Oxford college has computer facilities available. OSAP has a medical plan whereby it pays half the fees charged by a college doctor.
