MEDICAL CARE

As you know, your admissions letter advised you to make certain that your medical insurance covers you during your stay in England. If it does not it is possible to obtain traveller's health insurance for short periods. While in Britain, the National Health Service will treat you free if it is an emergency; however, since you do not pay British health taxes it is only fair that they charge you for other treatment. However, if you will be in Britain for six months, (2 terms) the NHS will treat you without payment just as they do British residents. Each college has a doctor on call and if you become ill you may consult him or her through the Porter's Lodge. There is a full hospital in Oxford. Remember that you have given us permission (in your release form) to act on behalf of your parents should an emergency arise (Naturally, this is unlikely, but it is good to be prepared). We will always do all we can to help but naturally we can accept no responsibility for any medical problems.

We have a medical plan with the New College doctor. He will charge you half his normal fees for normal consultation. He always speaks at our orientation to let you know about health matters in Oxford.

It happens rarely that a house may suddenly be hit by bed bugs or other pests. This is connected to communal living and happens in universities in many countries. We will immediately arrange for pest control which may make a temporary room more necessary. Naturally we are not responsible for these acts of nature, including floods, fires, etc.

Each college has a women's officer (and a woman doctor) who will be pleased to help female students who may have problems they do not wish to discuss with a male doctor or don.
